Innovators and entrepreneurs have always been an integral part of Gloucester’s character. The world has seen this in action for more than four generations of courageous Gloucester fishermen, and the creativity of a community of artists, writers and poets dating back to the 1700s.
Today, Gloucester’s entrepreneurial spirit is embodied by companies like Gorton’s of Gloucester, the seafood processing icon which had its beginnings here in 1755; Gloucester Engineering, a pioneer in plastics extrusion machinery; and Applied Materials, a leader in the semiconductor manufacturing industry. These any countless other businesses had their beginnings here in Gloucester.
The city’s future is shaped by these innovators, and by new generation of diverse entrepreneurs like Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute in marine science; the Innovation House in mobile software; Ocean Alliance in marine research; HireClix in recruitment advertising; and Atlantic Saltworks in ocean harvesting
Company Profiles
Rockport Brewing Company is expanding their operations in Blackburn Industrial Park in Gloucester. We recently toured the facility with owner/founder Ray Pickup and master brewer Julian Miller. Sales are up 20% year-to-date and by adding this new 800 barrels per year capacity, they hope to nearly double their annual production to 5,000 barrels in 2026. In addition to their Tap Room in Rockport, they are partnering this summer with local non-profits like Cape Ann Museum, Schooner Adventure and Maritime Gloucester. This includes a Portuguese style beer for Schooner Adventure, supporting events at CAM, and a beer truck on the pier at MG on selected dates, as well as doing “white label” beers for various organizations/activities. Pickup says that they also “plan to be adding to their beer products with kegged cold brewed coffee and other liquid refreshments.” We were most impressed with their commitment to community and worker benefits, and are happy to say “Sláinte” to our newest and expanding food/beverage craft brewer.

Visit Gorton’s of GloucesterThe Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute (GMGI) recently announced the launch of its environmental DNA (eDNA) Service Platform, a research service that processes and analyzes eDNA samples from scientists, conservationists, companies, and policymakers. With eDNA transforming how the research community studies and manages ecosystems, GMGI will leverage its experienced genomic research staff to deliver robust, efficient, and scientifically rigorous solutions for collecting, processing, analyzing, and applying eDNA data.
This is an example of the evolving nature of the ocean and port economy. Critical to protecting our oceans is understanding fish populations, biodiversity, and ocean health. The use of eDNA is an exciting tool that looks to provide more data at lower cost. GMGI, with its research location on Gloucester harbor and its bioscience academy in Blackburn Industrial Park is a marine technology leader in Gloucester, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and beyond.

C.B. Fisk is a renowned builder of pipe organs found in churches, cathederals, concert halls and universities throughout the world based on a belief that an organ is a means by which a musician brings music to life. The company designs, and then its skilled craftsman and musicians build, each instrument to function acoustically and aesthetically in a specific building. It starts with a precise scale model to ensure that the organ complements the architecture that surrounds it, followed by construction and then the important step of “voicing of the instrument, adjusting each pipe to the acoustics of the room.”
